A song is a musical composition intended for human voice performance. Often this is done at distinct and fixed pitches (melodies) using sound and silence patterns. Songs contain different forms including repetition and section variation. Written words created specifically for music, or specifically created for music, are called lyrics. If in classical music a pre-existing poem is set for composed music it is an art song. Chants are called songs that are sung on repeated pitches without distinct contours, and patterns that rise and fall.
